Trammell's Health & Fitness Tips - Health, Fitness, Nutrition & Training Tips to Keep you Healthy and Motivated

Most people have a fairly even amount of fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers in their skeletal muscles. Some people inherit a high percenatge of slow twitch muscle fibers which enhances their performance potential for endurance exercises such as a world class marathon runners. Other people inherit a high percenatge of fast twitch muscle fibers that enhances their performance potential for power activities such as sprinters or powerlifters.

Although both fiber types respond positively to progressive resistance training, the fast twitch fibers experience greater increases in size and strength which is known as hypertrophy. Hypertrophy is an increase in the number and size of myofibrils inside of muscle fibers. More simply its an increased amount of actin, myosin and related proteins that are responsible for force generation.
