Losing Weight Without Fad Diets

Hi there, this is Jason the trainer and we are going to talk about fad diets.

The truth is fad diets don't work to help you keep the weight you lose off long term.

So here is some good advice and that variety is key in your eating. Your body needs a healthy diet to develop properly. That means the right balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fat as well as a host of other nutrients.

When you go on a fad diet and exclude necessary nutrients, you are putting yourself at risk for becoming ill. Getting too little of any nutrient may cause an immediate problem. But if it is lacking for a long time, you may find you have health problems.

Also practice portion control. Americas obesity epidemic may not come solely from the type of foods people eat but also from the portion sizes. Food servings have grown larger and larger over the years.

So what does a healthy size look like?

For example:

  • A cup of fruit should be no larger than your fist.
  • One ounce of meat, fish or poultry is about the size of your palm.
  • 1-2 ounces of nuts equals your cupped hand.

Other strategies are to:

  • Eat a variety of foods such as lean protein, complex carbs, grains, fruits and veggies and good fats like omega 3 fats from fish and monounsaturated fats from avocodos, nuts and olives or olive oil.
  • Also eat at least 5 servings of fruits and veggies each day. Choose different colors of fruits and veggies to ensure optimal nutrition.
